About Marriage and Family Therapy

MFTs (Marriage and Family Therapists) have master’s or doctorate degrees in mental health or counseling psychology. They have specialized training in relationship dynamics, and family influences on a person’s mental health.

Systemic clinicians are prepared to support individuals, couples, and families by helping them understand how their families and personal experiences have impacted their mental health. Through the therapy process, a multitude of theoretical frameworks are used to establish effective communication and empower healthy relationships. We also have our therapists working hand in hand with our psychiatry team on location for those who use both services, which is a huge difference from most other practices.

Counseling vs Coaching? There Is a Difference!

Licensed mental health counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists, and licensed clinical social workers all have a minimum of 6-10 years of formal education with a master’s degree or higher. They have over 3,000 clinical supervised hours of practicing therapy before being eligible for licensure through the Department of Health. There are strict professional regulations that have to be met at a minimum of two years post-graduate school and must maintain CEUs and update licensure every three years with the State of Florida.

Life “coaches” do not have to have any formal educational requirements, although some may have a degree in another area. There are no regulations preventing them from calling themselves a life coach, although there are some certification programs that can be obtained without any required clinical supervision. This is why a coach cannot advertise themselves as a therapist, but a therapist can advertise and perform life coaching. There is a place for life coaches to play a supporting role in one’s life, but they cannot provide a clinical evaluation for a diagnosis or accept any medical or health insurance.

It is important to understand your family’s needs and goals and research the most qualified individual to get the support you really need.

About Us

FLCC provides mental health services, family therapy, psychiatry services, marriage counseling, and premarital counseling in Central Florida (Lake, Orange, and Polk counties). We guide you in discovering what brings you happiness and will make your life successful. This is a place to work through issues privately and confide in trustworthy therapists.

Our owner, Sandi, was previously a social worker who worked with families and decided she wanted to assist with more intensive intervention. She completed her graduate program with Palm Beach Atlantic University to obtain her marriage and family therapy licensure and to start her own practice in Clermont, FL, which at the time lacked therapy services. Her passion for seeing families experience life in a healthy and positive way has led to the expansion and growth of FLCC, which now encompasses seven locations in Lake, Orange, and Polk counties. With over 50 therapists, FLCC is leading the way in cutting-edge therapies and groups, such as Safe and Sound Protocol, Brainspotting, Imago therapy, EMDR, ART, MNRI, Expressive Arts and Music therapy, Action Sports therapy, and much more. Sandi has also been a keynote speaker with the Department of Children and Family Services and the Statewide Child Welfare Summit for over eight years, speaking on one of FLCC’s main specialties, trauma, and how it impacts the family unit. With the growth over the past few years into the largest private practice in Lake County, FLCC now has therapists in almost every school (public and private) in Lake County, FL.

Donnie Burchfield is the CEO/Co-Owner of FLCC and is married to Sandi. He has mentored hundreds of young men through high school sports for over 23 years. He primarily uses his football platform, although he has also coached wrestling, weightlifting, track and field, and girls’ basketball. Donnie is a dynamic and “out-of-the-box” speaker who often speaks at school forums and youth ministry events and has been in ministry for 23 years. He is also the lead pastor of a non-denominational church that is focused on reaching the next generation of young adults and youth in Clermont, FL. Donnie participates on numerous community boards and projects in Lake County, FL, such as FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), passing out food at local food pantries, and doing local outreach projects with other churches and organizations.

**Although Sandi is a Christian therapist, she is sensitive to others’ religious beliefs and provides research-based therapeutic interventions without imposing her spiritual beliefs on her clients.
